  • World Book Day cake sale

Thu 07 Mar 2024 Mrs. Ratley

We didn't dress up for World Book Day, however we had a Book Week with lots of activities including visiting readers, secret books, an author visit and a World Book Day themed cake sale.  We were so impressed by the creations we received.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who made cakes and to those who bought some cakes too!  We had a fantastic range of book themed cakes and the school hall was heaving full of people generous enough to purchase these fabulous creations.  I have added photographs of all entries below.

Our reading Ambassadors (Breakfast and Book Club children) helped to vote for the winner and the runner up and this will be announced in tomorrow's Greatness Worship.

Thanks so much to everyone again for their participation in this event.  We managed to raise £113.95 for new books for the library.

  • Coronation Garden 2023

Mon 19 Jun 2023 Mrs Mayhew

To celebrate the King's Coronation, we worked hard to crowdfund for a new Coronation Garden.  The school gardening club, in conjunction with Time the Ranger and the generous donations from the school community resulted in a beautiful garden - half themed to cater for bees and the other half on the theme of Red, White and Blue.  Mrs Mayhew then organised an afternoon of activities for the children, we invited members of the community and the PTFA sold cakes and cups of tea.  It was a wonderful day.  Thank you to everyone who donated time, plants and money to this cause.  The children love the garden.

  • A big THANK YOU!

Wed 03 May 2023 Mrs. Ratley

A BIG THANK YOU to all of the parents who gave up their time, energy and resources to helping Mrs. Green, Mrs. Deeks and me to tidy up the school grounds.  A thank you too to all of the children who also came and helped and behaved beautifully - you are a credit.

We are so very grateful to you all.  We know how precious time is at the weekend and we absolutely value you giving us so much time on a Saturday to benefit the school, staff and children.

Thank you too to everyone who donated materials for the afternoon.

  • Inspiring Angels 2022

Tue 29 Nov 2022 Mrs Ratley

    Inspiring Angels

School are working with Father Ben at Holy Innocents Church in Great Barton to have a Christmas treasure hunt.  We are asking children to produce an angel, or some angel wings to put up in their windows.  They can be as big or as small as you like.  Once the angel/wings are up, your child can find their house on the map in school and add a small picture of their Angel (parents are welcome to email these pictures in and we will print them off – please email cratley@greatbartonprimaryschool.co.uk).

We will then be encouraging children, with their adults in their family, to go for a walk in the Christmas holidays to find as many angels as possible and to mark them on a map of their own.  If they bring their maps back into school in the New Year, we will display them and give a prize for the most angels spotted!

We will be inviting other businesses and members of the village community to place angels in their windows too!

  • Harvest 2022

Mon 10 Oct 2022 Mrs. Ratley

Thank you to everyone who took the time to make a scarecrow for the competition for Harvest this year.  I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the wonderful creations and hope that you did too when you came to walk the trail on Friday.

I have attached a photograph of all of the wonderful scarecrows and included the 3 winners whose scarecrows will join Father Ben at Holy Innocents' Church.

We are all very proud of our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), who have worked hard with Mrs Betts and Mrs Borley to produce a travel plan and to organise a number of initiatives to raise awareness of, and encourage, sustainable travel.  The JRSO team have organised a number of events, for example Balance Bikes for reception and the Bikeability Scheme for year 6 as well as organising a range of competitions (most recently designing a Covid-safe and road safe sleigh for Santa). We have been lucky to have been involved with the local community and councillors to relocate the puffin crossing in Great Barton and to create a safe “Park and Stride” route to school.  The team were thrilled to have received the Modeshift Stars Bronze award for all of their efforts and are already planning on a number of future events to continue to build upon the work they have already done so far.  As a school, we are very conscious of the impact we can have on our environment.  The work we have done with Modeshift has helped to support our Green Flag Eco-Schools work and is really important to us.

  • Pupils launch a new Clean Air project at the school

Tue 04 Feb 2020 Mrs Ratley

Pupils launch a new Clean Air project at the school

Pupils launched an anti-idling campaign at the school on Friday 31st January, led by our new school Air Quality Experts: the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) and Eco Team. At a whole-school assembly that day, pupils learnt about air pollution, how it affects health, why children are especially vulnerable to the effects of pollution, and how they can reduce their exposure to pollution.

The JRSOs and Eco Team also attended a workshop where they practised talking to (pretend) drivers and asking them to switch off, and created some fantastic posters to discourage idling and encourage cleaner air at the school (see the pictures attached). At the end of the school day,  pupils and staff put on high vis vests, and asked drivers to switch off their engines if they were idling near the school at pick-up time. So convincing were the pupils, that 100% of the drivers that they spoke to switched off. They did a fantastic job! The pupils really enjoyed the experience and will hopefully be doing it again soon.

The school, The Eco Team and the JRSOs appreciate your help and support with this campaign to switch off engines for cleaner air.

The assembly and the training workshop were delivered with the support of West Suffolk Council.
