Phonics and Early Reading

Our school follows Little Wandle Letters and Sounds.  In September, we hold a workshop for a new reception starters.

We have seen improvement in our Phonics Screening Check outcomes since moving over to the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds approach.

We do not send our phonetically decodable books home.  We teach the skill in school (with at least 3 reading sessions a week and daily phonics sessions) and we ask parents to teach the "will" at home by sharing books and a love of reading.

All children bring home a library book and once they have worked to secure fluency in their reading, they will begin to bring home reading books that they can read themselves.

If you would like to support your child's reading at home, please see the links to videos which show you how the sounds are taught.

If you would like a copy of the phonics flashcards to practise at home, please visit the Collins website where you can order your own.

For your ease, we have uploaded some of the key documents below so that parents know what we are teaching and when and can reinforce how we teach at home.
