Purpose of study
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

What Art & Design looks like at Great Barton...
Intent
At Great Barton we aim to:
- Enable children to become visually literate and understand that art is a creative form of communication.
- Enable children to use a wide range of media to communicate ideas and feelings.
- Enable children to acquire and develop a range of skills and techniques which they can apply across the curriculum and beyond.
- Develop children’s capacity for imaginative and independent thought to enable them to experiment without the fear of failure, there is no right or wrong in art.
- Enable children through observation to learn about the world around them.
- Enable children to become independent in the planning and reviewing of their work.
- Help children learn about the role of art, craft and design in their environment and take inspiration from it.
- To develop an appreciation for artists from different eras, cultures and religions and their different styles of art.
